CAN I BE REAL FOR A MOMENT?

Being so far away from home, I often see pictures on Instagram or statuses on Facebook and long to be home.  I miss out on birthdays celebrations, spontaneous Saturday Brunches, and just good ole family fun.

I've had people tell me that they are living vicariously through me.  I suppose I can understand why.  On social media, I guess my life does seem pretty glamorous.  A young girl, who seemingly socializes often, travels the world, and does it all while pursuing her dreams to become a lawyer.  To their praise I am quick to say, "envy no one!"

I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, because I understand that I am incredibly blessed and highly favored (#Hallelu) and that my life is amazing.  However, there are times when I look at the very people who praise me and long for their life.  A group picture of friends out on a Friday night; a status about a cousin's day-date with their mother; or even a snapchat of my "besties" strolling through D.C., is enough for me to (unnecessarily) reevaluate my life.  I'm apparently not alone in my longing.

Psychologists say that there is a new psychological disorder known as FOMO or the "Fear of Missing Out."  It is perpetuated even the more through our generation's use of social media.

People could look at my social media accounts and think "MAN! That girl has the LIFE!" - without factoring in the infinite amount of time I spend reading through case laws, treatises, and meetings with my superiors only to sometimes be told my work is average and to "give it another attempt."

Am I suggesting that envy did not exist prior to social media? Not at all.  Giving people a glimpse of your life can be a beautiful thing - but it is just that - a glimpse.  There is a story behind every upload - one that many of us may not be aware of.

It's kinda slap in God's face to not appreciate where He's allowed me to be.  Earlier this summer, before landing in Equatorial Guinea, I vowed to not allow my longing to be near my loved ones, hinder my ability to enjoy where I presently am.  Each moment of life is a gift, and I refuse to waste a minute of it.  [I mean who wouldn't want to be open to enjoying this scenery?!]. Since doing that, it seems God has honored my gratitude.

COMMIT TO LOVING YOUR LIFE EACH AND EVERY DAY.
